We’ll continue talking about linear regression models,
but now we’ll add additional explanatory variables.
Thus, we move into multiple linear regression models,
although most people will just use the term regression.

We will continue to use the same slide set from yesterday.

Multiple Linear Regression

We’ll start talking about regression models.
First we will do an activity to suggest variables that could be modeled using
a regression analysis.
The activity will require students to identify a response variable,
the appropriate distribution for the response variable
(binomial, Poisson, and normal), and a
brainstorm of what explanatory variables would affect the distribution of the
response variable.

The main purpose of this activity is to get you to start thinking about what type
of regression model you will need to use.
The type of regression model will depend on the type of response variable:

Today we will introduce the probability distributions that form the basic
building block for sports (and many other types of) data.

Probability Distributions

Find another individual, who is not sitting next to you, and,
ideally, who you don’t know.
The less you know the individual the better.

Introduce yourselves by stating your name and your favorite statistics
course (STAT 4610X is not an option).

The categories chosen will be specific to sports analytics.
As a reminder, the term sports is being used very broadly,
i.e. so long as there has been at least one national or international championship
it will qualify as a sport.
